ATLAS-1 is planned to be the first of several ATLAS flights designed to cover an entire 11-year solar cycle, the regular period of energetic activity by the sun.  Co- manifested with ATLAS-1 is the Shuttle Solar Backscatter Ultraviolet Instrument (SSBUV), which provides highly calibrated measurements of ozone to fine-tune measurements made by other NASA and NOAA satellites.
