DÉFINITION

  • The Retroreflector in Space (RIS) experiment was provided by the Environment Agency (EA) of Japan on the ADvanced Earth Observation Satellite (ADEOS). The RIS is a 50 cm diameter passive cornor cube laser retroreflector designed to provide data to infer the distribution of ozone and other trace gases in the atmosphere. A ground-based laser beam is reflected by the RIS to the ground station and the constituent gases derived from the spectral response. A differential type laser radar system is used to eliminate the attenuating effects of the atmosphere.
