- Volcanic deposits can consist of tephra, which is airborne pyroclastic material. Extremely explosive volcanic eruptions can produce vast quantities of tephra over wide areas. Tephra layers can form regional isochronous stratigraphic markers. Tephrachronology can a very important tool in paleoclimatic studies. Volcanic ash horizons can also be used as chronostratigraphic markers.
