  • Coccolithophores are extremely small, flagellated organisms of the KingdomProtista, which are adorned with buttons of calcium carbonate, called coccoliths. The coccolithophores appear to contribute significantly to marine food chains by capturing radiant energy and manufacturing food during photosynthesis. The coccolithophores make up a considerable portion of the microscopic life in warmer regions, such as the Sargasso Sea.
