SNOW MELT  

DEFINITION

  • The melting of snow on top of the sea ice. Yearly snow melt on sea ice can be derived from remote sensing satellites such as Nimbus-7 SMMR and SSM/I on the DMSP satellites. Snow melt onset is defined as the point in time when microwave brightness temperatures increase sharply due to the presence of liquid water in the snowpack.
